Dead Plants & Living Objects + Listening Score
-

Dead Plants & Living Objects is a duo formed by Pierre Berthet, based in Belgium, and Rie Nakajima, based in the UK. In their performance, everyday objects such as tin cans, ceramics, sponges, and buckets are struck, rubbed, and thrown, bringing out the sounds and movements inherent in each object. Surrounded by things, the audience is invited to spend time listening closely to their quiet murmurs. The Listening Score #1 showing is based on scores created together with participants during the workshop held on October 24 and 25. With New York-based choreographer and artist Maho Ogawa as a guest, the performance shares scores that emerged from listening to sound, sensing the body, and walking through the city.
Following the performances, there will be an after-talk with the guest artists.

// Artist BiographyDead Plants & Living Objects
Dead Plants & Living Objects is a duo formed by Pierre Berthet, based in Belgium, and Rie Nakajima, based in the UK. Through performances and installations in which they strike, rub, and throw everyday objects such as tin cans, ceramics, sponges, and buckets, they create situations in which we are surrounded by things and invited to listen closely to their murmurs.
Pierre Berthet
Born in 1958, lives in Belgium. Studied percussion with G.E. Octors and André Van Belle at Brussels Conservatory, composition with Frederic Rzewski, improvisation with Garrett List and music theory with Henri Pousseur at Liège Conservatory. Composes and builds sculptural sound objects and installations (steel, plastic, water, motors, vacuum cleaners…). Presents them since 30 years in exhibitions and solo or duo performances, in music venues, festivals, galleries, outdoor contexts, etc. He worked with Frederic Le Junter, played percussion with Arnold Dreyblatt. For 10 years he played quite often the piece “Galileo” by Tom Johnson in many european countries.
Rie Nakajima is a London-based artist. After studying Art History at Tokyo University of the Arts, she studied sculpture at Chelsea College of Arts and the Slade School of Fine Art in London.
She creates sound through a combination of motorised devices and everyday objects, working across installation and performance. Since 2012, she has exhibited and performed in Europe, Japan, the US and beyond.
Her collaborators include David Toop, Keiko Yamamoto, Max Eastley, Angharad Davies, David Cunningham and Akira Sakata.
Maho Ogawa Choreographer / interdisciplinary collaborative artist
After working in Tokyo for ten years under the name Suiso Ogawa, Maho Ogawa has been based in New York since 2011. Her practice crosses a wide range of approaches, including bodily expression, choreography, video, text, computer software, and socially engaged art, through which she creates choreographic works, moving-image works, and installations.
Her work focuses on discovering the body’s inherent capacity for communication by examining how individual bodies are consciously and unconsciously shaped by their surrounding environments. She holds an MFA from the Performance and Interactive Media Arts (PIMA) program at Brooklyn College, City University of New York. In the United States, her work has received support from institutions and programs including Movement Research, the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, and Princeton University.

Tomoko Hojo is a sound artist and researcher working internationally with listening, voice, silence, and the body. Moving between performance, participatory projects, and archival research, she is interested in voices that are difficult to hear, forms of expression that are easily overlooked, and things that only appear faintly or partially.
In 2024, she developed the participatory project Recordari, which explored how listening, bodily sensations, memory, and encounters with place could be translated into simple scores and shared with others. Several ideas that later developed into Listening Scores were already explored within this project.
